Rookie Queensland sire Better Than Ready has been rewarded for an outstanding first season with an influx of quality interstate mares in the new breeding year.

Better Than Ready, who stands at Lyndhurst Stud near Warwick, has won the leading Australian first-season sire premiership for individual winners with 23, including three individual stakes winners.

The son of a champion sire in More Than Ready, Better Than Ready's offspring won 49 races in Queensland, NSW, Victoria and Asia.

Better Than Ready is the first rookie stallion in more than 40 years to get more than 20 individual winners in his first season.

Lyndhurst Stud master Jeff Kruger said he had expected Better Than Ready to be a top sire but probably not so quickly.

"But right from the early season trials last year we thought we might have something special as his horses were showing so much potential," Kruger said.

"The fact he is the first to get more than 20 first season winners since Without Fear in the 1970s is even better because there was such a strong line-up of new sires this season.

Better Than Ready, who stands for $30,000, has a full book of mares for the new breeding season.

"A large percentage of the mares this season will be from NSW and a good number of them are Group and stakes winners," Kruger said.

"It is exciting for Queensland racing that some of our sires are starting to attract the attention of top breeders."
