Caulfield Cup 2017

The 2017 Caulfield Cup will be run on Saturday October 21, 2017 at Caulfield Racecourse.

The 2400 metre race is seen as one of the toughest handicap races in the world and to no surprise it is the second most popular race in Australia behind the Melbourne Cup.

The Group 1 race has attracted many of the world's best horses with it's $3 million prize pool. Many of those have also tried to achieve a rare Caulfield Cup - Melbourne Cup double but only a handful have accomplished the feat in the past 30 years.

In 1998 the race opened it's doors to international competitors and it wasn't long before British raider Taufan's Melody took out the race.

Unfortunately there has also been a number of tragic events in the history of the Cup too. Australia's worst racing accident in history occurred in the 1885 Caulfield Cup when 15 of the 44 horses competing fell. Jockey Donald Nicolson was tragically killed in the accident.
