R7 Coopers Flying Hcp
R8 Advertiser Balaklava Cup

Cut Off Time 3:38pm

"JAKE Stephens will be hoping lightning can strike for the third time in six years in Wednesday’s Listed $80,000 Advertiser Newspaper’s Balaklava Cup.

The Victor Harbor trainer is chasing his third victory in South Australia’s premier provincial feature having won the race with Alcopop in 2009 before producing the quinella last year with Gris Caro and Detox.

He’ll again have two runners this year — Detox, a younger half-brother to Alcopop who has drawn barrier eight, while Extra Virgin will have to overcome a horror barrier (15) with Troy Baker in the saddle.

“The barrier hasn’t really helped Extra Virgin, while Detox has drawn well,’’ Stephens said yesterday.

“There doesn’t appear to be a huge amount of pace in the race so Extra Virgin might have to roll forward from the wide gate and look for some cover.’’

Extra Virgin is coming off a solid effort when third in the Listed Penny Edition Stakes at Morphettville behind fellow cup contender Justify That and Stephens said he couldn’t fault the lightly-raced mare stepping out to her pet distance of 1600m.

“She’s done well since (last run) and having been to the track for a win is a bonus, plus her record at the mile (three wins from three starts) speaks for itself.’’
