In my experience my punting started in 2 ways:

1. Back in high school my mate own a couple of greyhounds and one morning at school he said I've got a tip for you... Our dogs will run the quinella.. His confidence was high so I thought I'd chuck on $50.. Sure enough the we smashed the quinella pool.

2. My mum years ago was head bar maid at the race tracks in Adelaide. Mixing it with so many people in the racing circles she often got reliable mail and you guessed it, I followed the money trail $$$$

What keeps me in the punting game?
Mixing it with mates.
The skill of trying to pick winners.
The colour, the flair that goes with racing.
The ability to refine your skills in the punting game.
