Mac has faith in Cheese at Sandown

Trainers Tony and Calvin Mcevoy hope to get a clearer picture of where to aim Mac ‘N’ Cheese after she runs at Sandown.

Mac ‘N’ Cheese runs in the Listed Jim Moloney Stakes (1400m) on Saturday and her performance will determine whether she heads to the top level or aims a rung or two below.

Tony McEvoy has the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday week or the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 13 in mind for the filly.

“I’m hopeful that she can tell us it’s the Thousand Guineas,” McEvoy said.

Mac ‘N’ Cheese, by Sebring, is a younger half-sister to Group 1 winner Exceedance and the Peter Moody-trained Oxley Road.

While those two siblings are sprinting types, McEvoy believes Mac ‘N’ Cheese can stretch out to 1600m of either the Edward Manifold or the Thousand Guineas.

Mac ‘N’ Cheese just failed over 1400m at Sandown in June before winning the Listed Oaklands Plate (1400m) on the tight Morphettville Parks track the following month.

After a freshen up, Mac ‘N’ Cheese was slowly into stride before running home strongly to finish fourth behind Zouzarella, an opponent on Saturday, in the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m) at The Valley on September 4.

McEvoy said Saturday’s race was another class rise, but believes the filly is up to the task.

“I personally have enough faith in her to think she can go that way,” McEvoy said.

“She hasn’t been to this level yet, so we’ll learn a lot about her on Saturday.

“But her run at The Valley was fabulous and her work has been really lovely.

“She’s a quality filly and getting back on the bigger track will suit.

“She’ll love Sandown, it will be beautiful for her.”
