Melbourne Cup 2020

The 2020 Melbourne Cup will be run on Tuesday 3rd November, 2020 at Flemington Racecourse.

The famous race is undoubtedly Australia's most prestigious horse race and attracts interest right across the globe.

The thoroughbred race is run over a distance of 3200 metres and carries a prize pool of over $8 million. It's also the equal longest Group 1 race in Australia, sharing the honor with the Sydney Cup.

The Melbourne Cup has lured many of the world's best stayers but it's not just world class horses that are attracted to the Cup. Off the track there are many marquees which hosts many of the biggest celebrities from Australia and abroad.

Melbourne Cup History

The first Melbourne Cup was run in 1861 awhere 17 horses contested the event. The race attracted more than 4000 and the winners took home a modest prize of 710 gold sovereigns and a gold watch for the owner.

Since then the Cup has held host to many memorable and historic moments.

Phar Lap carried 63kg in what was an incredible win in 1930. The following year he was handicapped a staggering 68kg and was only able to manage 8th place.

In recent history there has been no better achievement than Makybe Diva's 3 consecutive Melbourne Cup victories in 2003, 2004 and 2005.

The Melbourne Cup is often referred to as "The race that stops a nation" and this couldn't be more true. Come 3pm on that first Tuesday in November and it feels like just about every Aussie has placed a bet on the Cup.

A large field of 24 contests the Melbourne Cup and with horses from all over the world it has been a notoriously hard race to pick a winner from.

History tells us that it's been a hard race to win for favourites going into the race. Many outsiders have written their name into the history books, more recently Prince of Penzance won paying $101 in 2015.
