We’re off to Flemington on Saturday for another outstanding edition of Super Saturday!
The Australian Cup and the Newmarket Handicap headline the program, but all nine races have drawn quality fields, and it is set to be an outstanding betting program.

Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) – 12:35pm AEDT
Tip: No. 3 Va Via
Va Via takes winning form into the first on Super Saturday and she can continue her rise through the grades.
The Godolphin-trained filly has continued to improve with each of her four starts since debuting, and she was rewarded over 1000m at Sandown last time.
This is harder, but black type doesn’t look beyond her.
Group 3 Matron Stakes (1600m) – 1:10pm AEDT
Tip: No. 1 Turaath
Flying Mascot has opened a pretty clear favourite here, and she was very impressive last time out, but I am a big fan of Turaath and I am instead going to side with her.
Turath enjoyed a meteoric rise to prominence in the spring, highlighted by an impressive Group 2 win, and she has been excellent in three starts back this time.
She steps out this week rock-hard fit and following a very smart run for fourth in Group 1 company, and she’ll obviously relish the drop in class.
Listed Moomba Plate (1100m) – 1:45pm AEDT
Tip: No. 1 General Beau
The Moomba Plate has drawn an open field of three-year-olds, but I am going to stick with General Beau.
General Beau has been a strong and consistent performer throughout his career, and he was set a pretty lofty first-up assignment when stepping out in open Group 1 company in the Neds Oakleigh Plate.
Having finished a credible seventh, I’m expecting big improvement out of the horse, and he’s another who will relish a decent drop in class this week.
Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) – 2:20pm AEDT
Tip: No. 10 Sumatra
The VRC Sires’ Produce has drawn another open field of two-year-olds and at publish, we’re up with $5 the field.
Sumatra still does plenty wrong, but she also looks to have plenty of ability, and we can have something on each-way at around the $15 mark this week.
The well-bred filly finished second behind Counttheheadlights on debut at The Valley in January and I thought she raced well without a lot of luck last time.
Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1600m) – 3pm AEDT
Tip: No. 4 Argentia
She only just missed following a tough run last time, and I am more than happy to stick with Argentia in the Kewney Stakes.
The Frankel filly was far too good for them in the Kevin Hayes Stakes first-up from a spell, and there was still plenty of like about her last-start effort.
Fitter third-up and back to Flemington, I can’t find a reason why she won’t be in the finish.
Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) – 3:40pm AEDT
Tip: No. 1 Masked Crusader
It always draws an outstanding field of sprinters and some of the best in the country will contest this weekend’s Newmarket Handicap.

Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) – 4:20pm AEDT
Tip: No. 3 Spanish Mission
The time-honoured Australian Cup remains one of the most highly sought-after prizes in Australian racing.

Group 3 Shaftesbury Avenue Handicap (1400m) – 5pm AEDT
Tip: No. 2 Groundswell
Groundswell has improved for two starts back this time, and this looks the perfect race for him.
The well-bred son of Fastnet Rock has been a good horse for the Freedmans throughout his career, and races like this one really have been his bread and butter.
He kept on well to the line to finished fourth, beaten two lengths by Corner Pocket second-up, and he’s another whom we can have something on each-way at around the $14 mark.
Cirka Plate (1400m) – 5:25pm AEDT
Tip: No. 5 Cardigan Queen
The consistent Cardigan Queen can win the last on Super Saturday.
Cardigan Queen completed an ideal return to the races when proving too good for credible BM64 field at Sandown when resuming, and she only just missed behind Barb Raider in The Vanity last time.
Fitter third-up and dropping back in class, she’s the one to beat.
