Amelia’s Jewel headlines big Karrakatta Plate field

The Siyouni filly is unbeaten after looking an impregnable force in winning the Supremacy Stakes (1000m) and Gimcrack Stakes (1100m) respectively.

The budding star is in line to give trainer Simon Miller his fourth victory in Perth’s premier race for two-year-olds, joining Valour Road (2018), Whispering Brook (2016) and Night War (2011).

A rival trainer looking to spoil Miller’s attempt is Hayden Ballantyne and his daughter of Vert De Grece, She’s Greysful.

The filly had a good look at Amelia’s Jewel when they clashed last-start in the Gimcrack Stakes (1100m), and although running on solidly for fourth, her losing 2 ½ length margin could have been cut shorter if she had some luck early in the straight.

Ballantyne concedes if she lives up to favouritism Amelia’s Jewel will take a power of beating and is the logical horse to beat, but funny things can happen in racing and at a minimum he’s confident She’s Greysful will be competitive.

He says her previous run in the Gimcrack Stakes was full of merit.

“Obviously I wanted to win it, but she got held up quite significantly and couldn’t get out until the 250m mark,” Ballantyne told Tabradio.

“She ran on really well, she ran on as good as the ones that finished in front of her.

“Hopefully we get a bit more luck in running this week and it’s a different story.”

She’s Greysful’s recorded one win and a second to Sheeza Belter in the Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic (1200m) at Pinjarra from four career starts.

Her constant companion since her debut in January has been jockey Steven Parnham who maintains his association in the Karrakatta Plate.

The senior jockey gave She’s Greysful a positive assessment after her track gallop this morning. (Tuesday).

“Stevie (Parnham) galloped her this morning at Lark Hill and she’s sharp as a tack,” Ballantyne said.

“He said that’s the best she has felt.

“Our job is done and we have to keep her in one piece until Saturday.”

Before tonight’s barrier draw She’s Greysful is $15 with Tabtouch. Amelia’s Jewel, to be ridden by Pat Carbery, is $1.75.

Ballantyne says he’s hoping She’s Greysful can draw between barrier five and ten to give Parnham options in the run.

He’s hoping good luck can help bridge the gap on Amelia’s Jewel.

“In the Gimcrack we had no luck in running, really,” Ballantyne said.

“Hopefully they (Amelia’s Jewel) gets the bad luck this time and get stuck on the fence.

“That’s an exceptional horse, exceptionally well bred and she’s exceptionally well trained.

“That’s the one to beat, we all know that, but hopefully she gets the bad luck and we get all the good luck.”
