Andrew Adkins is riding a wave of momentum in Sydney racing, with another successful double at Rosehill confirming his resurgence in town as the 2023/24 season heads into its final months.
The former champion apprentice scored aboard Motoscafo in the Midway Handicap (1200m) for trainer John Thompson before guiding Freight Train to victory in the TAB Handicap (2000m) for the powerful Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr partnership.
The performance follows a pair of wins at the same track just a fortnight earlier, including a stakes triumph in the Listed Lord Mayors Cup (2000m) on Touristic and another victory on King’s Secret.
With many of Sydney’s senior jockeys competing in Queensland, Adkins has taken advantage of the openings in the jockeys’ room and is determined to make the most of the opportunity.
“Any winners are good winners but obviously in town, especially on a Saturday, is much better,” Adkins said.
“I’m getting good support which I am thankful for and I’ve just got to try to execute off the back of that.
“Things are good. I’ve had a bit of success lately and that certainly helps you gain a bit of confidence.”
Adkins, who was Sydney’s top apprentice in 2016-17, has more recently been a regular on the provincial scene. His Rosehill double takes him to nine metro wins this season and 58 statewide.
Having previously partnered Motoscafo to victory at Newcastle, Adkins used his experience to his advantage.
“She had a really good turn of foot late at Newcastle that day and I wanted to ride her similarly, get to the outside and get her to rocket home,” he said.
“She is always strong late if afforded the right opportunities.
“I rode her at on the ‘Kenso’ (Kensington track) a couple back and tried to ride her forward and she didn’t like that.”
Motoscafo, now a winner of three of her 10 starts, is proving herself a worthy successor to her half-siblings Tristate and Blazing Miss, both of whom earned stakes placings during their careers.
