Annabel Neasham mulling over Zaaki options

A Royal Ascot campaign isn’t off the table for star galloper Zaaki, but trainer Annabel Neasham says her focus is on having the horse at his peak for the Australian spring.

Zaaki was given a few days in the paddock after his brave second to Think It Over in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes before returning to Neasham’s Warwick Farm stables this week.

She is still looking into the logistics of taking him to England for the Royal Ascot carnival in June or heading north for another Brisbane winter carnival campaign where a defence of his Hollindale Stakes and Doomben Cup titles are among the options.

Neasham will have further discussions with Zaaki’s owners this week when she hopes a final decision will be made.

“We are still making up our minds, we’re fifty-fifty at the moment,” Neasham told Sky Sports radio.

“It would be great to showcase Australian racing over there (at Royal Ascot).

“Chris (Waller) looks like he’s got a few going there and Artorius as well, so if he went it would be really exciting to represent Australia internationally. At the same time, there is such great prizemoney here as well.

“The main priority if we do go overseas is that we can get him back in time to be up and rock and rolling in the spring.”

Neasham’s recent decision to set up a satellite stable in Queensland could convince her to opt for a Brisbane winter carnival tilt.

With Gold Coast trainer Michael Costa taking up an opportunity overseas, Neasham has acquired some of his boxes and believes it will be a big boost having a base in Queensland.

“Sydney is still very much going to be our main base and our focal point, but the carnivals up there are brilliant,” she said.

“There is Magic Millions as well and for horses we don’t think are going to be able to win in town here, they have some other options for them up there.”
