Another feature for Childs as he triumphs in Bendigo Guineas

Though far from a $1 million Group 1, Jordan Childs welcomed the chance to build on last weekend’s achievements with a new feature victory at Bendigo over the weekend.

At peak form, the jockey seized the first Black Type contest of Bendigo’s Golden Mile day by combining with the Danny O’Brien-trained filly Gold Coast Belle to deliver a battling success in the $200,000 Listed Bendigo Guineas (1400m).

This success trailed his surprise Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes win the week earlier on Geegees Mistruth – his maiden elite win since eight years back – and had Childs buzzing to carry on the streak.

“Last week was great and I’ve continued to ride winners since then, so we’re in a bit of form at the moment and very happy,” Childs said.

“I feel like I’ve been riding well for a while, I’ve been very consistent in my riding the last few seasons and I’ve always been around the mark.

“Not riding Group 1 winners, but riding Group 2 and Group 3 and feature races, so to knock over that second Group 1, hopefully I can build a bit of momentum off that going into the Brisbane Carnival and then into spring.”

With Childs remaining composed, there was no overreaction needed when the on-speed Gold Coast Belle was relegated wide for much of the journey, powering them to a resilient late charge for the prize.

The $2.70 elect fended off Bel Mezyaan ($8.50)’s inside raid by a neck, pulling half a head clear of the $31 third-place Sulek.

“It was a really good effort from her and all credit to the horse,” Childs said.

“The race probably didn’t work out how we would have liked but good horses overcome that.”

Gold Coast Belle’s Bendigo Guineas score lifted her to four wins from just six races, the filly by So You Think runner-up in both her prior non-victories.

Come next weekend, Childs travels interstate to ride She’s A Hustler in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes on the Gold Coast.
