The backmarking style of Bauhinia requires favourable circumstances in running, a commodity she has seldom received.
Co-trainer Lee Curtis looks forward to the mare enjoying improved fortunes through autumn, with her campaign launching in Saturday’s Wenona Girl Quality (1200m) at Randwick.
“Her work has been as good as ever, if not better,” Curtis said.
“Her trial was really good. She finished behind Peter Snowden’s horse, Raging Force, and she beat home Arctic Glamour in the trial.
“She’s going super. We only gave her one trial but we’re happy.”
Having won two of her 11 races to date, Bauhinia matched it with Sydney’s elite mares last spring, enduring bad luck when fifth to Stefi Magnetica in The Invitation (1400m) and falling agonisingly short of Arctic Glamour in the Hot Danish Stakes (1400m).
Curtis notes that from her midfield barrier on Saturday, she will have the luxury of time to muster her potent closing speed.
“It’s a six furlong race, so she will be getting back anyway,” he said.
“She’s third in the betting so she is a chance.”
The Wenona Girl market features only three horses below $10, as Gangsta Granny ($3.20) pipps Idle Flyer ($3.50) at the head of affairs, with Bauhinia next best at $9.50.
