Joe Azzopardi is full of optimism as he teams up once again with Snow God, a lightly raced three-year-old he believes has genuine upside.
The Playing God gelding made a strong impression on debut in January, overcoming a slow start and a wide run to score a smart victory after reeling in early leader Niccimota.
Snow God started as the short-priced favourite on that occasion and delivered on the hype, but was unable to replicate that performance next time out, finishing fourth and later diagnosed with an elevated heart rate, prompting an immediate spell.
Back for his second campaign, Snow God returns in the Tabtouch Past The Post Handicap (1000m) at Bunbury, with Azzopardi buoyed by his strong trackwork earlier in the week.
“He went really well in his gallop on Tuesday,” Azzopardi told Tabradio. “The wide gate is a concern, but with the right run, he’ll be right in the finish.”
“He’s not the finished product just yet, but there’s no questioning his talent. He’s a horse with real potential and I expect he’ll climb through the grades quickly.”
Snow God is currently priced at $4.80 with Tabtouch, behind Terratif ($2.90) in early markets.
Azzopardi is also bullish about the chances of Amazing Cheat, who steps up to 2231m in the Swan Draught Handicap and has been in consistent form, winning two of her past three starts.
“She’s incredibly tough and consistent,” Azzopardi said. “The step up in trip shouldn’t be an issue, and from a soft draw with a light weight, she’s right in it.”
At $5.50, Amazing Cheat is third favourite behind Dun With The Blues ($3.10) and Snazzler ($4.60).
Azzopardi also gives Planet Cash a chance in the Nixon Electrical Handicap (1400m), suggesting the gelding could surprise.
