Begg weighs up track conditions for Biologics

Even though Biologics finished almost ten lengths behind the winner in her most recent outing, Grahame Begg found the performance far from a waste.

The Cranbourne trainer was able to confirm that the three-year-old I Am Invincible filly does not handle Heavy tracks well, based on her latest race.

The Pinecliff Racing-owned filly suffered no ill effects from her 1200-metre run at Flemington on June 6, which marked her first start on a track rated worse than Good. Begg has nominated her for Saturday’s 1200m 3YO fillies handicap at Caulfield, but a start is dependent on the weather.

“She was going really well into the race and we thought she’d run really well, but the unknown was the ground,” Begg noted.

“Obviously they got rain on the day of the race and it deteriorated and she just wasn’t comfortable at all.”

“She’s nominated, so we’ll see what happens and what the week brings.”

The Caulfield track was rated a Soft 7 on Monday, but with minimal rain forecast for Melbourne this week, it is expected to improve by race day.

Biologics will be third-up if she runs. Her disappointing Flemington effort was preceded by a dominant first-up victory over 1100m in a fillies and mares benchmark 62 grade at Werribee.

That win came after a couple of unplaced runs in Stakes grade against her own sex last spring, with her only other start being a maiden win at Pakenham.

While Begg is undecided about Biologics’ participation, one of his other fillies, Takeko, is confirmed to race.

The lightly-raced five-year-old mare will be aiming to improve on her impressive first-up record in the $150,000 fillies and mares BM84 over 1100 metres.

Her first-up record comprises two wins and a second from three starts. The daughter of Saxon Warrior gave an indication of another strong fresh performance with a second placing in a recent Pakenham jumpout.

Luke Cartwright, claiming 1.5kg, rode Takeko in the jumpout and will be aboard on Saturday. Begg is eager to see the mare compete for the first time since her win at Moonee Valley on August 9.

“She’s a progressive mare, she’s coming off a bit of a layoff but she’s going well and she’ll come in very well at the weights after the claim,” Begg stated.
