Blue Diamond Stakes beckons for unbeaten Big Sky

The Blue Diamond picture became clearer on Saturday after Big Sky delivered another polished performance for trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent.

The unbeaten colt now heads betting for the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes following his dominant win in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes at Caulfield.

Stablemate Guest House is also firmly in calculations and is set to resume in the Blue Diamond Prelude next weekend.

Big Sky was sent out the $1.60 favourite and controlled the race from the front, holding off Invincible Son by three lengths, with La Gitana close up in third.

Price said the colt had taken a noticeable step forward since his debut success at Flemington.

“I think he lost a bit of nervousness from his first run,” Price said.

“He was a bit unsure of himself then, but today he was much more settled.

“He’s not an alpha colt, he’s learning, and with a good three weeks he should be right where we want him.”

The Hall of Fame trainer said the extra week between runs was important for the colt’s development.

“That’s why we went this way rather than the Prelude,” he said.

“You can’t run these young horses too often in their first prep, but hopefully he can get to the Blue Diamond and then maybe on to Sydney.”

Price admitted Big Sky still has improvement to come, particularly in the closing stages of his races.

“He was probably feeling it a furlong out, but that will improve with experience,” he said.

“We won’t change anything. We’ll just let him keep learning.”
