Caulfield stakes test may bring back Jamie Spencer for Light Infantry Man

Ciaron Maher has made a plea to UK jockey Jamie Spencer to ride his charge Light Infantry Man at Caulfield.

The gelding is entered in the upcoming Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) this Saturday, with Maher checking Spencer’s schedule to ride him.

Spencer had been Light Infantry Man’s mainstay jockey in the UK before coming to Australia in 2022 to partner the gelding at Rosehill’s Golden Eagle.

Light Infantry Man shipped back to the UK after the Golden Eagle, continuing with Spencer until re-entering Australia for Randwick’s 2023 King Charles III Stakes.

Zac Purton handled duties then, and post-arrival in Australia, the gelding has seen mounts from Jason Collett, Craig Williams, Mark Zahra, John Allen, Blake Shinn, James McDonald, Chad Schofield, and Ethan Brown.

Australia’s McDonald and Brown alone have won races on Light Infantry Man, Brown securing a pair at Group 1 including last year’s Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington.

Suspensions bench Brown and Zahra, while McDonald rides Sydney commitments, so Maher called Spencer to gauge interest.

“Ethan Brown’s suspended, Mark Zahra’s suspended, so I was talking to Jamie Spencer,” Maher said.

“I’ve still got to confirm that, but he knows the horse quite well.

“He rode the horse out here in the Golden Eagle and in a lot of Group 1 races in Europe, so it would be good if he came out, but we just need to firm that up.

“He is a quirky horse, and Ethan obviously gets on very well with him.

“He came through his first-up run in great order. He’s feeling great and doing everything right.

“It looks a nice race for him at weight-for-age over the 1800 metres.”
