Libertini to kick-off campaign in The Galaxy

Sydney’s wet weather has all but foiled Anthony Cummings’ bid to get Libertini ready for a first-up assault on the Group 1 The Galaxy.

Cummings had slated Saturday week’s Rosehill sprint for the mare’s autumn return but said the loss of some barrier trial sessions due to the rain and transfer of others to a Polytrack surface had put her program behind schedule.

“I’m a bit behind where I would like to be,” Cummings said.

“She needs a pretty solid next week to make it possible.

“Honestly, I think we’re more likely headed to the T J (Smith). The Galaxy is Saturday week and I think, at this stage, the wet has probably beaten us.”

Most of Libertini’s best runs have been at the start of her preparations and Cummings has been mindful of that in recent campaigns.

She tackled the William Reid Stakes first-up last autumn, finishing third to Masked Crusader, and was eighth to Nature Strip when she resumed in The Everest during the spring.

The five-year-old, who has banked just shy of $2 million in stakes despite being sparingly raced, has been off the scene since her midfield effort behind Eduardo in the Classique Legend Stakes at Rosehill in October

The Group 1 T J Smith Stakes (1200m) is at Randwick on April 2.
