Chris Waller’s pair set for success in Peter Young Stakes

Birdman, prepared by Chris Waller for his third local campaign, stands poised to unleash the ability spotted by owners during his Irish purchase as a yearling.

The gelding claimed his debut two staying victories before joining owners like Ozzie Kheir and John O’Neill with Melbourne Cup dreams.

Last year’s Melbourne Cup passed Birdman by, but this campaign’s early efforts point towards contention in November’s edition.

After taking the Blamey Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on February 28, Birdman targets the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield Saturday.

Jockey Ben Melham believes the gelding’s recent form shows full adjustment to Australian ways, predicting sustained ascent.

“It took him a little while to settle in and we’re starting to see the best of him now,” Melham said.

“I feel he’s gone to a new level this preparation and can continue that upward trajectory.

“He’s a happy horse and seems to have really fitted in here now.”

Serving as prep for the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington March 28, the Peter Young Stakes features Birdman and fellow stable runner Buckaroo.

Buckaroo missed the prior week’s All-Star Mile at Flemington owing to minor mucus on scope, entering the Saturday Peter Young Stakes.

Jye McNeil takes over from suspended Mark Zahra aboard Buckaroo.

Previously, McNeil rode the gelding to second in Caulfield’s Futurity Stakes (1400m) last month, then opted for Leica Lucy in All-Star Mile.

McNeil approved of Buckaroo’s Tuesday Caulfield workout, noting strong extension after the trivial setback.

“He felt amazing,” McNeil said.

“He towed me throughout his work. He was really sharp and he seems in great order.

“He was free in his action and pulled up fine after the gallop, so there’s no indication of there being anything wrong with him.

“It’s great to get the opportunity on him second-up and the rise is distance to 1800 metres is going to be right up his alley.

“He seems to love it at Caulfield and I’m excited to get the chance to ride him again.”
