Tom Dabernig is set to unleash a trio of mares in Saturday’s running of the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield, each arriving at the race under different circumstances.
Leading the stable’s hopes is Cleo Cat, who comes into the event in red-hot form after landing the Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville. Dabernig reported the mare had handled her lead-up preparations well, including a pleasing gallop at Warrnambool on a rain-affected surface.
“She’s been very straightforward since Adelaide,” Dabernig said. “She worked over a Soft 6 this week and handled it perfectly.”
Romantic Choice will also line up, hoping to bounce back from two below-par runs this preparation. Her form earlier in the year, including a win over Oakleigh Plate placegetter She’s Bulletproof, gives connections hope.
“Things haven’t quite gone her way this campaign, especially from poor barriers,” Dabernig said. “But she’s ticking along nicely and should improve with luck.”
Fickle, a daughter of I Am Invincible, returns to racing after a spell and brings with her a strong record since joining Dabernig. Though she disappointed last time at Sandown, the trainer is hopeful she can return to form.
“I think Caulfield suits her better than Sandown,” he said. “She’s fresh, sound, and has trialled well. We’re confident she’ll be competitive.”
Dabernig is also targeting the Sir John Monash Stakes and Bletchingly Stakes with the trio later this winter.
