Trainer Kris Lees believes the stars may align for Rivellino in Saturday’s Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m), with a low draw and step up in distance expected to bring out the best in his promising colt.
Making his first Melbourne appearance, Rivellino has drawn barrier three for the Caulfield feature, and Lees says he has no concerns about the three-year-old racing left-handed for the first time.
“I’ve been a bit forgiving of his runs this time in,” Lees said. “He’s been back in the field at Rosehill where it’s been dominated by on-speed horses. We’ve always wanted to get him to the mile — even last prep — but he’d had enough after the Sires’. We’re looking forward to Saturday.”
Rivellino’s record as a juvenile was strong, notching three wins and finishing fourth in the Golden Slipper and fifth in the ATC Sires’ Produce, and Lees said he has retained plenty of natural ability despite some luckless recent runs.
The Newcastle horseman took advantage of an opportunity to gallop Rivellino at Caulfield on Tuesday, and the colt handled his first look at the tight-turning track well.
“He’s had a few gallops at home the Melbourne way,” Lees said. “Once every couple of weeks we go that direction just to give the course proper a rest — more than anything else — so he’s used to it.”
Craig Williams, who won two Group 1s at Caulfield’s previous meeting, retains the ride and will be looking to secure his first Caulfield Guineas victory.
“He’s in great order, but we’re realistic — he needs to find his top form,” Lees said. “If he jumps cleanly and can take a handy spot, it’ll help. He closed off well last start in fast time, even if he never really threatened.”
