First stakes winner for revamped Godolphin in the Tramway Stakes

Bjorn Baker has etched his name into Godolphin’s new training era with Pericles clinching the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) at Randwick, handing the global powerhouse its first feature win under the public model.

At odds of $9.50, Pericles surged through late to defeat Private Eye ($2.10 fav) by 1-1/4 lengths, with Withyourblessing ($19) in third. For Baker, the win was more than just a race result. “To win for a superpower like Godolphin is a massive thrill,” he said. “It’s a highlight of my career and a privilege for my family and team. He’s a horse with genuine talent.”

Having also taken out the Tramway in 2022, Pericles clearly enjoys the event, and Baker now has his eyes on the Epsom Handicap. Jockey Josh Parr was full of praise for the big-striding gelding. “He needed a touch of luck in the straight, but once the run came he exploded,” Parr said.

Earlier, Chris Waller enjoyed success of his own when Lindermann bounced back in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m). After struggling on a heavy track in the Winx Stakes, the gelding appreciated firmer footing to edge out Sir Delius and Vauban. “He’s one of our favourites,” Waller said. “We knew he’d improve and today he delivered. He’ll stick to these mile to 2000m races now.”

The 7 Stakes in two weeks looms as his next target, with other Group 1 options later in the spring.
