Get In The Spirit too fast in the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes at Flemington

Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr have taken the opening two juvenile races in Melbourne after Get In The Spirit outsped her rivals at Flemington.

Get In The Spirit scored a debut win in the Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (1000m) on Saturday which followed Cavalla at the same track in the opening two-year-old race of the season on September 22.

Drawing wide in the 11-horse field, jockey Damian Lane elected to come down the outside of the Flemington straight where she showed too much pace for her rivals.

Despite thinking her work was done inside the final 100m, Get In The Spirit ($8) raced to a two-length win from Lascars ($9.50) with Rampant Lion ($7) a neck away third.

Lane said he made the decision to come down the outside which was not easy to do with the majority of the two-year-olds racing towards the inside.

“The easy option is to go down to the fence and have something to follow but she’s so professional that I was confident she would handle it well and she did,” Lane said.

“She just had a little look at the mounting yard here when I went past and I had to get her mind back on the job, but she had a bit in hand.

“She’s very quick, and quick through those middle stages which is going to win her a lot of races.”

Price said he would need to discuss with connections where to place the filly.

The obvious choice would be to head to the Magic Millions on the Gold Coast in January, but Price said he would prefer to set her for the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes in February and the Group 1 Golden Slipper the following month.

“I know she’s a Magic Millions filly but if you’re trying to win a Group 1 with these fillies, it is difficult for a Victorian horse to use all your energy in a Magic Millions, albeit at $2 million, when there’s a Blue Diamond and a Golden Slipper,” Price said.

“My advice would be to aim for a Blue Diamond and a Slipper, and I’d spell her with regard to that.

“That’s my first thought but we do get a few different opinions in this game.”
