Peter Snowden seeks to harness familiarity as three-year-old colt Beadman contests the Group Three Gold Coast Guineas, returning to where he claimed his most memorable conquest.
The colt announced himself in the Ken Russell Memorial Classic (1200m) last year on this bill, surging clear by eight lengths, and Saturday’s 1200m contest marks his reappearance at the venue.
“He’s a good traveller and going back to the scene of the best win he’s ever had, so hopefully he can replicate that on Saturday,” Snowden said.
Results this season have been patchy for Beadman, who opened with a battling score in the Fireball Quality (1100m) at Randwick, then struggled without placing in the Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) or Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m).
Wide throughout his last effort, he dropped away near the finish, so Snowden opted for trials to ponder alternative strategies.
“From those wide gates, we’ve been forced to go forward on him, and I don’t think it’s the way to ride him,” he said.
“A bit more conservative might be the way to go.
“He won that day at the Gold Coast by (almost) ten lengths by jumping and leading, but I think it was a false read because the track was a bog. He is a good wet tracker, a lot of horses didn’t handle it and he did, and he just got further and further in front, so he might have been a bit flattered by the track.
“In my mind, his best runs have been when he’s just sitting off the speed.”
James McDonald reaffirms his commitment by retaining the ride on Beadman, set to depart from barrier eight in the 16-horse contest.
The Guineas has proven fertile ground for Snowden, who has captured four of the past 20, most notably with Marboosha in 2021.
