Team Hawkes training trio weigh up Brave call

Team Hawkes is weighing up options for their promising gelding Brave One this weekend, with the three-year-old nominated for races in both Sydney and Melbourne.

Brave One has drawn barrier 12 for the Quayclean Handicap (1300m) at Randwick and barrier 13 for the Shop Flemington Handicap (1100m) at Flemington, prompting co-trainer Michael Hawkes to carefully consider all factors before committing to a location.

“At Flemington, drawing out wide could actually be an advantage down the grandstand side,” Hawkes said.

“But it’s about more than just gates — we’re comparing distances too. Sydney is 1300, Melbourne is 1100. He’s capable in either scenario, so we’ll take time to decide.”

The stable will make a final decision by Thursday, with their dual presence in both cities allowing them to adapt based on track conditions and forecast weather.

Gelded after his last preparation, Brave One has impressed with runner-up finishes behind older horses on rain-affected tracks in both Canterbury and Rosehill. This weekend, he’ll return to racing against his own age group.

“The horse is flying,” said Hawkes. “Facing three-year-olds again is ideal and gives him a great shot. He’s got a bright future and will only improve further.”

Dylan Gibbons is set to ride in Sydney, while Jye McNeil will partner Brave One if the team opts for the Flemington route.
