Reports from the Victorian Jockeys Association indicate that the two riders who fell in the Caulfield Cup have been discharged from medical care.
Mark Zahra and Jye McNeil were conveyed to the Alfred Hospital after a serious incident occurred during the Caulfield Cup races on Saturday.
The chain of events saw Half Yours, under Zahra’s guidance, fall, with McNeil’s mount, Ohope Wins, then colliding with it.
Sadly, Ohope Wins was euthanised due to the severity of its injuries, as determined by Racing Victoria vets.
Both jockeys were taken for medical assessment and observation. Zahra was released later on Saturday, with McNeil receiving clearance on Sunday morning.
“Both boys have escaped serious injury,” the VJA communicated in a statement.
The racing career of Half Yours, trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, is likely over following Saturday’s fall. The horse, like the previous year’s Caulfield and Melbourne Cup champions, suffered injuries and required stitches for cuts.
“We are blessed to have taken our horse home and he seems OK,” Tony McEvoy told racing.com.
“It was upsetting for everyone. They all (the stable staff) felt it.
“We sent out a really nice message to all our team at Flemington and Ballarat last night to assure them that our horse is OK and will recover.
“They wear it on their sleeve because they get very close to these horses and do a great job.
“It was gut-wrenching to watch but we feel blessed that we’ve been able to take our horse home and the jockeys are OK.”
