Riding King Of Roseau at a reduced weight proved a masterstroke for Tom Sherry, enabling the swift runner to charge to a dominant win in Randwick’s Group Three Liverpool City Cup.
“He had 54 (kilos) today, so he tested me a bit this morning. I was glad it all worked out OK,” Sherry said.
“We had the right run in the race today. He quickened extremely well.”
As a juvenile, King Of Roseau was fourth in the 2024 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) and earned a pair of Listed placings at the subsequent age, yet his top performances have emerged more recently.
The horse captured the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Stakes (1200m) at Flemington during August and delivered another explosive finish for the $2 million Magic Millions Cup (1400m) victory at the Gold Coast last month.
“We saw what he did down in Melbourne in the Aurie’s Star and in the Magic Millions. He has been an absolute revelation his last couple of preparations,” trainer Peter Snowden’s assistant, Aaron Lau, said.
“When he’s on song, he’s got a lethal turn of foot.”
King Of Roseau’s current preparation dates back to November, managed with rest periods by Snowden, leaving Lau to consider limits as tougher carnival fixtures loom.
“We’ll have a good think. The races only get tougher from here and he’s probably a few rungs behind those topliners,” Lau said.
“But if we set him for the right races, he will certainly make his presence felt.”
King Of Roseau ($8.50) produced a scorching acceleration from well back to score by 1-1/4 lengths from Enriched ($7.50), ahead of Axius ($4.40) in third by a head.
