A return to peak fitness and a confident ride from Jamie Melham combined to deliver Magnaspin a deserved victory at Caulfield.
The Corstens and Larkin-trained gelding led throughout to claim the A Caulfield Kind Of Summer Handicap (2000m), breaking a winless run dating back to May last year.
After rolling to the front early, Magnaspin ($3.90) held off Jenni’s Meadow to score by half a length, with Regal Lion finishing close up in third.
Co-trainer Will Larkin said the key had been allowing the gelding to gradually build into fitness this preparation.
“Last time in he was overdoing things and not finishing his races,” Larkin said.
“This time we gave him a proper spell and built him up slowly, which has made a big difference.
“He’s been able to settle better and that’s helped him run the trip properly.”
Larkin said Melham’s patience in front was crucial.
“She let him roll along comfortably and didn’t ask him to do too much too soon,” he said.
“When she asked him to go, he responded well.”
With a Listed race now on the radar, punters can monitor Magnaspin’s next target through leading racing betting markets.
