Ciaron Maher’s team enjoyed a flying start to Saturday’s Caulfield card, with jockey Craig Williams producing a race-to-race double that brought him closer to Blake Shinn in the Melbourne jockeys’ premiership.
Williams steered Signature Scent to an impressive win in the Sportsbet Get On Now Handicap before returning aboard Scampi to take out the Sportsbet Race Reviews Handicap.
Signature Scent, now unbeaten in two starts, will be set for the Group 3 Quezette Stakes after her latest victory, with the Maher stable indicating she could be a serious player in spring features.
Stable rep Leigh Allen revealed they are awaiting gene test results that will help shape the filly’s future but are pleased with her progress so far.
“We’ll keep her to shorter races for now and aim for the Quezette,” Allen said. “She’s shown a great attitude and a sharp finish.”
Scampi, meanwhile, rewarded his supporters with a tough front-running performance, holding off the fast-finishing Salsa Fellow in a tight finish.
“He’s been frustrating at times, showing talent but not always delivering. Craig rode him perfectly today,” Allen said.
Williams’ Caulfield double could be a turning point in the title race as he eyes another premiership crown.
