2025 Melbourne Cup qualifier a Choice option

Bankers Choice could be on the verge of a double shot at spring glory, with connections weighing up a tilt at this weekend’s Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes (2800m) at Flemington—a race that offers direct entry into the Melbourne Cup.

Already guaranteed a place in the Caulfield Cup thanks to his gritty victory in the Mornington Cup, the Mongolian Khan gelding is now being considered for another crucial qualifying race by trainers Ben, Will and JD Hayes.

“We’re just going to see what he’s like at staying,” Will Hayes said. “He’s a horse in form. I thought his win at Mornington was full of merit. We’ll have a look at the race and let his final piece of work guide us.”

The Andrew Ramsden attracted 28 entries on Monday, including Athabascan, Berkshire Breeze, Military Mission, Silent Surrente, Smokin’ Romans and Torranzino, ensuring a deep field for Saturday’s $300,000 staying feature.

Bankers Choice is among several horses transferred to the Hayes team following the passing of trainer Mike Moroney. The stable has already enjoyed early success with other former Ballymore gallopers like Oak Hill and War Machine.

Hayes credited the transition’s smoothness to ex-Ballymore foreman Anthony Feroce. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and we’re very lucky to have him. He’s giving us great guidance and he’s also a great connector with clients.”

The Flemington meeting will also host the Listed Straight Six (1200m), featuring high-profile runner Lim’s Kosciuszko among 25 nominations.
