Melbourne Cup 2025 start up for grabs in the Andrew Ramsden Stakes 2025

Athabascan is set for a crucial test at Flemington on Saturday in the Andrew Ramsden Stakes (2800m), with Melbourne Cup ambitions on the line.

The former French galloper, trained by John O’Shea and Tom Charlton, is targeting the Melbourne Cup, and a victory this weekend guarantees a ballot exemption into the spring feature.

Having raced at Flemington twice previously, Athabascan showed promise in both efforts—particularly with a close second in The Archer last spring, missing out narrowly on a Cup berth.

Since then, the son of Almanzor has remained in Sydney, winning the ATC St Leger and placing fifth in the Sydney Cup in April.

Charlton explained the gelding has been kept on the fresh side ahead of Saturday’s contest, including a Warwick Farm gallop and final tune-up on Tuesday at Randwick.

“He hasn’t done a lot since the Sydney Cup, so it was just a case of taking him to Warwick Farm for the day and giving him a hit-out,” Charlton said.

“This was the most likely race with potential Melbourne Cup 2025 aspirations in the spring.”

Ben Melham, fresh from his involvement in the KIDS Foundation’s Tour d’Horse, has been booked for the ride.
