Mick Price sets sights on Coolmore Stud Stakes

It wasn’t quite the result the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr stable was expecting when Extreme Warrior blitzed his rivals at Caulfield.

Highly spruiked as a two-year-old, Extreme Choice finally broke through for a maiden win at Echuca on October 1 before taking out the Group 3 Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) on Wednesday.

Under the guidance of Zac Spain, Extreme Warrior ($4.80) raced to a 3-¾ length win from the $3.20 favourite, and stablemate, Profiteer with Minsk Moment ($3.80) 3-¼ lengths away third.

All the pre-race discussion had centred around Profiteer who was rebounding from a first-up defeat in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) at The Valley last month.

Price and Kent Jr added earmuffs and a crossover noseband to Profiteer’s gear in a bid to get the colt to race more tractably.

Profiteer seemed to race within himself early, but when jockey Jye McNeil asked him to come back underneath him, he started to throw his head around.

But Price and Kent Jr were delighted to come away with a quinella.

“A quinella is a quinella and they both ran well,” Price said.

“I’ve just got to keep thinking about Profiteer, but Extreme Warrior was very good.

“If these are the horses that are going to the Coolmore and this is the race that you use, why wouldn’t you be confident about Extreme Warrior?

“He stood up and stood up very strongly. He wasn’t challenged and ran a strong 1200 metres and will turn up in the Coolmore.”

Price has not given up on his thoughts of heading to the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on October 30 with Profiteer.

“Let’s hope the stablemate is going to go up and up and up, and that Profiteer has been beaten by a very smart horse,” Price said.

“There’s a little bit of work to do on that one though but I certainly don’t want to give up because the Coolmore is worth so much being a stallion.

“I’ll be no doubt thinking about this at 1am tomorrow sitting bolt upright.”
