Group-winning mare Bossy Nic resumes her racing campaign on Saturday in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) at Flemington, with the Tony and Calvin McEvoy stable confident she is well-suited to both the straight track and predicted soft conditions. The now five-year-old has an impressive record over the Flemington 1200 metres, boasting two wins and a placing from four starts.
Bossy Nic announced herself early in her career by winning the Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes in 2023. Racing manager Rayan Moore said Saturday’s set-up is ideal for the mare’s return. “She has a terrific straight-track record and really enjoys soft ground,” Moore said. “She trialled on the Ballarat synthetic recently without blinkers, and we know she improves sharply when they go back on. She’s fresh and ready to go.”
Moore added that despite Bossy Nic’s rating of 88, the Aurie’s Star looks a suitable kick-off point. “There are some quality runners like Joyful Fortune, Marble Nine, and Lady In Pink, but there’s a bit of a tail to the field, so it looks a great race to start her prep. We’re confident she can build into a Black Type campaign as the spring progresses.”
After an early Stakes win as a two-year-old, Bossy Nic struggled under big weights in three-year-old features, with her only win last preparation coming in a Benchmark 90 race. However, the McEvoy team believes maturity will help her take the next step. “She really came into her own on rain-affected tracks last prep, and even her runs on firm ground were strong,” Moore said. “She ran behind A Little Deep last start, who went on to finish fourth in The Goodwood. If that horse was in this field, she’d be favourite, which says a lot about Bossy Nic’s form.”
