Chris Waller, seasoned by the demands of Winx’s iconic 33-victory streak, shows restraint in his efforts to shield Autumn Glow’s untainted run.
The mare, seen by many as racing’s most captivating new talent, debuts her current campaign in the Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Randwick this Saturday, the $1.55 choice for win nine in a row.
Waller notes his main concern isn’t prolonging Autumn Glow’s pristine record but securing the proper setup for her to be in prime shape on debut.
“Not really. I have been in that territory before,” Waller said.
“She is prepared for next week exactly how she would have been prepared last week. She’s not screwed down and with room for improvement.
“And when she gets beaten it will be bad luck, not through ability.”
The Apollo Stakes (1400m), a key carnival precursor, lines up 10 horses, six under Waller’s guidance.
From draw nine, Autumn Glow signals a resumption mirroring her spring closer, highlighted by Group 1 debut victory in the Epsom Handicap and a Golden Eagle (1500m) conquest.
Preparations encompassed two trials and an exhibition gallop mid-meeting at Randwick last weekend, sealing approval from James McDonald.
“She has come back well, basically where she left off,” Waller said.
“Everything has gone to plan so far. Two trials, a nice easy gallop today and James is very happy. He said she was never out of second gear.”
She targets progression through the Verry Elleegant Stakes (1600m) to the George Ryder Stakes (1500m), with later steps adaptable.
Limited to a mile previously, potential next ports include the Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m), hinging on distance experimentation by owners.
Headlining the Apollo Stakes field alongside Autumn Glow are barnmate Aeliana, Ceolwulf (multi Group 1 victor), and Stefi Magnetica (Doncaster Mile champ). Explore the betting markets for the race to back her in the Apollo Stakes.
