Perfect 2000m opportunity beckons Tom Kitten

Victories in several All-Star Mile contests have positioned Tom Kitten as a premier 1600m operator Down Under, and he now faces a key test this weekend to underline his 2000m potential.

The five-year-old seeks to break his current 2000m drought since the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes in October 2023 by tackling the $2 million Australian Cup at Flemington.

By former Euro quick Harry Angel, this gelding filled minor spots in the prior campaign’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Champions Stakes, both going to Via Sistina, across his recent 2000m appearances, as co-trainer Sam Freedman opines the extension past his All-Star Mile success is beneficial.

“He’s in good form and at 2000 metres he might be slightly more effective than the mile,” Freedman, who trains in partnership with his father Anthony, said.

“He bounced out of the (last) run really well, so he’s going to be ready to go next week.

“Three weeks between runs suits and his fitness is good.”

A win in the Australian Cup would extend Tom Kitten’s current streak to three this campaign, succeeding the Group 3 Heffernan Stakes (1400m) and All-Star Mile defence at Flemington on March 7.

Godolphin’s homebred has secured eight wins in 31 attempts, with eight more places, totalling excess of $7.5 million in stakes.

With 16 entries declared for the Australian Cup, potential foes for Tom Kitten include Pride Of Jenni, Birdman and defending champ Light Infantry Man.
