Trainer Gavin Bedggood and the connections involved with Piastri have experienced an immediate return on their investment with a victory at Mornington.
Having previously been under the stewardship of the Ciaron Maher stable, Piastri recently underwent an online sale and subsequently won the Devilbend Golf Club Handicap (1200m) on Saturday.
A Flemington victor in July, Piastri’s last performance for the Maher stable saw him finish in fourth place at Sandown on August 22.
“We purchased him online two-and-a-half weeks ago and he arrived in fantastic order,” Bedggood told Racing.com.
“When there was a bit of rain forecast and he drew where he did, it was always going set up really well for him.”
Guided by jockey Blake Shinn, Piastri ($8) achieved a win by a long neck from Space Rider ($14), with Ferivia ($17) finishing a further three-quarters-of-a-length behind in third.
Bedggood stated that he had made only a few minor adjustments for Piastri since the gelding transferred from Maher’s Cranbourne stable to his own premises near the training centre.
“He lives out in the yard now during the day,” Bedggood remarked.
“We’ve galloped him twice since we’ve had him and we’re just trying to keep it pretty simple.
“He’ll go to the beach now and have five or six days of R and R and then we’ll try and follow the weather with him.”
Bedggood noted that the Soft 5 track surface was conducive to his performance, and fortunately for Piastri, the race presented itself at an opportune moment.
Shinn commented that Bedggood has established a reputation for his proficiency with horses transitioning from other training establishments.
“He got a talented horse that was up and running and Gavin just put his polish on him as we know he’s a wonderful trainer,” Shinn said.
“He’s made his name with horses like this, and everything just panned out perfectly. He had the draw, got the rain and the set-up he wanted, and he was able to deliver.
“It was a great result for the owners who have come into the horse for first time and have got their money back.
“One-run, one-win. It’s a bonus.”
