Profiteer will be set for Group 1 sprints in the autumn after his return to winning form on the straight course at Flemington.
The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr-trained three-year-old took out the Schweppervescence Plate (1000m) on Tuesday to break a winless streak of four runs since winning the Inglis Millennium (1100m) at Randwick in February.
Profiteer had earlier won his debut over the straight 1100m course at Flemington last December.
Sent out the $2.20 favourite under James Mcdonald, Profiteer registered a 1-½ length win from Direct ($15) with Enthaar ($3.50) a further three-quarters-of-a-length away.
Price said the Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington and the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m), both in February, would be on the agenda for Profiteer.
“That would be two beautiful stallion-making races and I think that is a good plan,” Price said.
“He’ll be bigger and stronger again and they’re races that could beautifully suit him.
“It takes a bit of working out these horses.
“I thought he was well-rated by James. A good strong 1000 metres. They broke 11 (seconds) most of the way and he was able to sustain it.
“That’s two starts down the straight for two wins and hopefully in the Lightning it’ll be three starts for three wins and he’ll be a Group 1 colt, and he’ll get a nice harem of mares at Newgate.
“You can see that he is an aerobically gifted colt, fast, and I think that’s the best way for him.
“It was good to see some stamina and we all know he’s a fast horse so … Lightning Stakes.”
