Profondo off to the spelling paddock

Boom colt Profondo’s forgettable autumn campaign has been terminated after just two starts.

Racing New South Wales stewards on Monday announced that the Group 1 winner’s trainer Richard Litt had advised that the colt had been sent to the spelling paddock.

The son of Deep Impact finished fourth, beaten 8-1/2 lengths by Anamoe, in Saturday’s Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) which was enough for Litt to abort plans to progress to The Championships and reset for spring.

“Trainer Mr R Litt has advised Racing NSW Stewards that whilst Profondo has pulled up with no abnormalities after racing in the Rosehill Guineas on Saturday, a decision has been made to spell the colt and aim at the Spring Carnival,” stewards advised in a statement.

The Rosehill Guineas was the second start this year for Profondo, who resumed with an erratic 13th of 15 in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 5.

They were the $1.9 million Magic Millions yearling’s only two outings since winning the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick last October at just his third start.

Profondo’s withdrawal and the uncertainty around the remainder Anamoe’s preparation leaves Hitotsu the $2.50 favourite in TAB’s market on the Australian Derby, which will be run at Randwick on April 2.
