Repossession too good in the Beaufine Stakes

Repossession confirmed his status as one of Western Australia’s most exciting sprinters with a commanding win in the Listed Beaufine Stakes (1000m) at Pinjarra, overcoming a disrupted preparation to notch his first stakes victory.

The gelding had been forced to miss a run the previous Saturday due to a foot abscess, and co-trainer Chris Gangemi admitted he had serious concerns about whether the horse would be right to run.

“He’s a good horse,” Gangemi said.

“I haven’t had one this good for a long time.

“He’s dealt with some crap in the last week.

“Even once the abscess blew out, he was still pretty sore on his heel.

“For him to deal with that, miss some work, his heel a bit tender, and still win, he’s a really exciting horse.

“I was sort of 50-50 whether to start him or not, and even to gallop him on the Tuesday, but I’m glad we did now.

“He’ll go to the paddock now.”

The victory marked Gangemi’s third Beaufine Stakes win following triumphs with Durendal and Rock Magic, the latter a fan favourite and a former stable star.

Repossession was a $62,500 yearling purchase and has now collected five wins from seven career starts, taking his earnings close to $500,000.

Though comparisons with Rock Magic are premature, the Gangemi brothers are excited about what lies ahead.

“You should never compare him to Rock Magic,” Gangemi said.

“He has a long, long, long way to go to be half as good as him.

“But he’s definitely the smartest young horse we’ve probably ever had.

“I think that’s just the start of a very good career hopefully.”

Stablemate Phanta could only manage seventh, while Repossession’s jockey Brad Parnham, who worked hard to make the 54kg weight, went on to ride a double aboard Timeless Gem, trained by Stephen Miller—who also saddled Beaufine runner-up Toropa.
