Rose Hammond achieved a special moment in her budding riding career with a determined victory aboard Lake Vostok in Saturday’s RMBL Investments Rising Stars Final (1600m) at Flemington.
The prestigious apprentices-only event marked the conclusion of a season-long series of races across country Victoria, and while Hammond couldn’t clinch the overall title, she made the final count with her first success at headquarters.
“I’ve had my eye on this race all week,” Hammond said. “Riding at a light weight was a big advantage, especially in the closing stages.”
Guided by the experienced hands of trainer Luke Oliver, Lake Vostok ($9) was allowed to relax early under Hammond before surging home to score by half a length over Jazz Affair ($6.50), with Cindy Falls ($7) narrowly behind in third place.
“Watching the replays, I noticed she didn’t finish off well when pressured early,” Hammond explained. “So I followed Luke’s plan — let her settle, let her travel, and she finished strongly.”
The race may not have carried black type status, but it held personal significance for Hammond, who ended the series tied for second place alongside Sarah Field, just two points behind winner Tom Prebble.
“This event is fantastic for apprentices,” Hammond said. “I knew I couldn’t win the series overall, but my aim was to win this final. It’s a big thrill to do it here at Flemington.”
While Prebble was crowned series champion, his race didn’t go to plan, finishing at the rear of the field aboard Sound It Out for Chris Waller. Nevertheless, he joins a strong list of past winners including top jockeys Jye McNeil and Ethan Brown.
“I’m disappointed not to score points today,” Prebble said. “But I’m grateful to RMBL and to my mentors Patrick and Michelle Payne for the opportunity to ride good horses through the series.”
“Some riders had their first taste of Flemington today, and it’s great to be part of that. I hope this series helps launch my career the way it has for others before me.”
