During their The Everest meeting, stablemates Joliestar, Angel Capital and Lady Shenandoah finished within a length, and trainer Chris Waller battles to pick between them ahead of the Expressway Stakes.
“Joliestar has come back really well. James (McDonald) has been on her in a few pieces of work and her trials and been very happy,” Waller said.
“I don’t know where the ceiling is with Angel Capital, but he is very, very good. That’s what we will find out about him.”
Lady Shenandoah, Waller notes, is perhaps underrated after spring misfortunes.
“Through bad luck, I guess she is. She had no luck (last campaign),” he said.
At the elite tier, Joliestar and Lady Shenandoah shine, but Angel Capital seeks Group 1 entry.
Plagued by luck in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m), he struck a rampant Jimmysstar in second place via the CF Orr Stakes (1400m) to finish spring.
Waller proclaims the four-year-old’s superior show is impending, a Group 1 star on the horizon.
“It’s as simple as that,” he said.
“He seems equally effective left-handed or right-handed. He will be ready to go fresh. He’s a big strong horse, a proper horse.”
Unkeen on an instant rerun for the sprinters, Waller mulls choices, eyeing Angel Capital for Newmarket Handicap (1200m) while Joliestar, the defending champ, eyes Sydney’s Canterbury Stakes (1300m).
Pre-post wagering pegged Joliestar $2.60 favourite for the Thursday Expressway Stakes (1200m), from Lady Shenandoah at $3.40 and Angel Capital $4. Fans can dive into the betting markets for the race to find the best value on Expressway Stakes contenders.
