Trainer Gavin Bedggood harbours dreams of seeing Burning Heartz contest an Oaks race in the future, but his immediate objective is to secure a Stakes victory for the filly.
Having tasted success on debut at Sandown on July 1, Burning Heartz is now bound for Adelaide to compete in the Group 3 South Australian Sires’ Produce Stakes, a 1400-metre affair at Morphettville Parks on Saturday.
Bedggood had contemplated giving Burning Heartz a spell after her Sandown win but decided that adding a Stakes victory to her debut success would be beneficial for her record.
The prospect of racing on a heavy track, similar to the one she won on at Sandown, also influenced the decision to travel to Adelaide, as the track was rated heavy on Friday.
“I had the option of tipping her out and putting her away for the spring, but’s shown us that she’s very adept on wet ground,” Bedggood remarked.
“There was this Stakes race, so it’s a chance to have a two-year-old that’s a city winner with the chance to add some Black Type to her name.”
“It is almost mission accomplished if she could do that.”
“She’s got good ability. Wet ground is zero issue, and she’s drawn a good barrier, so I think she will be very competitive over there.”
Bedggood indicated that Burning Heartz would require a rest at some stage, which could potentially rule out an appearance in the VRC Oaks (2500m) at Flemington later this year.
However, he suggested that there are several Oaks races in the autumn that might be more suitable for the filly.
“We’ll reassess what happens after Saturday’s race, but she will need a break at some point,” Bedggood stated.
“How long that is, I’m not too sure.”
“You would like to think she could be an Oaks filly, but that may be in the autumn when the tracks are a bit softer too.”
