Tigroni edging closer to Magic Millions Classic goal

Tigroni’s path to the Magic Millions may not have gone exactly to script, but her connections are hopeful the detour will still deliver the desired result.

The filly had been set to debut in a midweek race last month with the aim of progressing through to the Magic Millions 2YO Classic lead-up at Wyong.

When that initial assignment was abandoned due to insufficient nominations, Tigroni instead stepped out at Rosehill on November 29, finishing a gallant second to Fireball.

Missing Wyong proved costly in terms of qualification points, with Paradoxium claiming the race and firming as favourite for the Gold Coast feature in her absence.

Despite the setback, co-trainer Tom Charlton believes things may have worked out favourably.

“It was a bit frustrating, but you never know, maybe it will end up for the best,” Charlton said.

“It was a good race, that Wyong race, and with the cards we have been dealt, we’re pretty happy with how everything has unfolded.”

Tigroni endured a wide run from an outside draw on debut yet still fought on strongly, finishing only a length from the winner.

She now faces another wide alley, drawing gate nine in a capacity field for Saturday’s Spelling at Coolmore Mt White Handicap (1100m) at Randwick.

The race represents a crucial opportunity to earn enough prizemoney to secure a berth in the Magic Millions Classic (1200m) on January 17.

“She’s had a week off since that run where she was excellent. Hopefully she can break into the Magic Millions,” Charlton said.

“To our eyes, she looks like she has come on a bit from that experience and she’s in a good headspace so she’s a chance.”

Zac Lloyd again partners Tigroni after their encouraging debut run together.
