Tony Gollan’s Precise Star aiming for metro success

Precise Star has quickly established himself as a valuable addition to Tony Gollan’s stable, winning both his starts since being purchased by Queensland connections.

The gelding, previously trained by Chris Waller, had mixed results in Sydney but has since found his form with victories at Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast.

While these were maiden and benchmark 58 races, Gollan is of the opinion that the four-year-old has the credentials for city-level competition.

His next engagement is The Lawn Shed Class 2 Handicap (1680m) at Ipswich on Wednesday. A 59-kilogram handicap will be reduced by apprentice Bella Youngberry’s three-kilogram claim.

“I think the mile suits him,” Gollan stated. “He comes off a dominant win at Gold Coast so he steps to that midweek grade which I don’t think will be too much for him and he has improved.”

Youngberry, with 800 rides under her belt, maintains a 14% winning strike rate and a 40% placing rate. Her record with the Gollan stable is particularly strong, with 26% winners and 55% placings from 38 rides.

“He gets in well with Bella Youngberry’s claim and he’s the right horse for this race,” Gollan concluded. “There wasn’t much we had to do with him after he arrived but he is a nice horse though he does have some quirks. He definitely has metro racing ability.”
