Royal Insignia is set for an important test at Flemington this weekend, with trainer Grahame Begg considering a quick turnaround into a Group 1 target if the four-year-old impresses. The entire runs in the Group 2 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) on Saturday and could progress to the prestigious Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield a week later.
“If he can win or be very competitive, we’d have to weigh up the Rupert Clarke,” Begg said. “The spacing between runs has been good, so a back-up won’t worry him. If we don’t go that way, the Gilgai Stakes back at Flemington is another logical option.”
Royal Insignia resumed in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes at Caulfield on August 16, working home for third on ground that did not suit. Connections are hopeful he will relish the drier surface down the Flemington straight.
Last season the colt won four on the trot, including the Group 3 Manfred Stakes, before finding the mile of the Australian Guineas beyond him. Begg said his recent trial at Caulfield Heath showed he was progressing strongly.
“He’s in terrific order and thriving in his work,” Begg said. “He’s a horse that’s much better on top of the ground and his trial has given us confidence he’s ready to go.”
Royal Insignia will carry 53kg with Craig Williams taking the ride on Saturday.
