Mornington trainer Rory Hunter struck gold at Flemington as Autumn Mystery claimed the Howden Victoria Derby Preview (1800m), giving the young conditioner his first city winner.
Stepping up to 1800m proved the key for the son of The Autumn Sun, who had hinted at ability in shorter races last season. Ridden confidently by Blake Shinn, the $4.60 chance lunged late to edge Engine Of War ($6) by a short half head, with Options ($3.10) another narrow margin back in third.
Hunter said the win was especially meaningful given the faith shown by connections. “It’s been an incredible journey with this horse. We’ve believed in him from day one, and I’m thrilled it’s finally come together,” he said. “The owners have knocked back big offers for him and supported me as a young trainer. I can’t thank them enough.”
The Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) is now firmly on the radar. “That’s the dream. We’ll see how he pulls up, but at this stage, I’d say we’re heading that way,” Hunter said.
Shinn was equally impressed by his mount’s progress. “He’s got an aura about him and carries himself with purpose,” the jockey said. “He’s still got to switch on mentally, but he’s got a serious engine. Even making mistakes, he still found a way. That’s the mark of a good horse.”
After the win Autumn Mystery firmed into $8 second favourite for the Derby, with Engine Of War maintaining his place at $4.50.
