It has been a heady week for connections of the Ciaron Maher-trained Vivy Air, who has backed up a game second to stablemate Gringotts in the Big Dance with a thrilling win in the $2 million Five Diamonds.
Collecting $600,000 for her runner-up finish on Tuesday, Vivy Air thrived on the tight turnaround and produced a rails-hugging surge to win the 1800m feature at Rosehill.
The victory added $1.155 million to her account, taking her total earnings for the week beyond $1.7 million.
Assistant trainer Jo Gerard-Dubord praised her resilience.
“Backing up like that is not easy. She’s very tough,” he said.
“Getting that win two starts ago helped her confidence and we always felt 1800 metres would suit her.”
Ridden by Reece Jones, Vivy Air settled near the rear before slicing through along the rail to defeat Transatlantic and Militarize in a driving finish.
Jones admitted he had concerns mid-race.
“When I was so far back early, she wasn’t travelling well for me,” he said.
“I was worried — but she proved me wrong.”
Bullet Point, well supported in early markets, failed to fire after missing the start.
“We were in a pocket,” jockey Cieren Fallon said. “He just couldn’t quicken.”
