Giga Kick trials nicely ahead of Black Caviar Lightning Stakes return

Clayton Douglas is confident Giga Kick is tracking perfectly for his autumn return following an encouraging trial at Caulfield Heath.

The star sprinter is set to resume in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) on February 14, his first race since claiming the Group 1 Champions Sprint at Flemington.

Giga Kick was narrowly beaten in an 800-metre trial on Thursday with Ethan Brown aboard, but Douglas said the run was exactly what he wanted to see.

“It was nice work and he looked nice and fresh and well in himself,” Douglas said.

“Brownie gave him a good report. He said he began good, travelled nice and strong and finished off lovely.

“That will bring him on now. It’s two weeks to the Lightning which should be perfect timing for him.”

The gelding enjoyed a light spring, racing just twice for two wins, including the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes.

Plans to travel west for the Group 3 Gold Rush were abandoned to ensure a smooth build-up to autumn.

“We wanted to give him a breather and aim him up properly,” Douglas said.

“The autumn really suits him and gives us options up to 1400 metres.”

After the Lightning Stakes, Douglas is eyeing the Group 2 Challenge Stakes before the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes.

The All-Aged Stakes is likely to be his final run of the campaign.
