I Am Superman to get dry track in Golden Mile

The continued wet weather in Sydney has forced trainers Peter and Paul Snowden to send I Am Superman to Melbourne.

The Irish-bred son of Footstepsinthesand is bound for Bendigo on Saturday to contest the Listed Golden Mile (1600m).

I Am Superman is no stranger to Melbourne having made four previous hit-and-run visits.

He was successful at his first trip south, scoring over 1400m at Caulfield in August 2020 before taking out the Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill at his next start.

I Am Superman returned to Melbourne after that victory to finish tenth in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) and seventh in the Group 1 Cantala Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.

He started 2021 by finishing fourth in the Group 2 Shaftesbury Avenue Handicap (1400m) at Flemington and rounded out the year finishing second to Sinawann in the Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield in November.

Andrew Angelone, in charge of the Snowden team in Melbourne, said the plan had been to run I Am Superman in Sydney, but the weather dictated the gelding be sent south.

“He’s 100 per cent better on good ground and the way Peter and Paul have been speaking about him he’s going as good as ever,” Angelone said.

I Am Superman is yet to win over 1600m in Australia but did win over the mile journey at Naas in Ireland as a three-year-old.

Angelone does not see Saturday’s trip being a concern adding Sydney’s weather may decide whether I Am Superman remains in Melbourne for his next start.

“We’ll be dictated to by the weather,” Angelone said.

“If it happened to dry out a bit in Sydney, he could head back up, but ultimately, it’s a good track here, so that’s why he’s in Melbourne.”
