Willowy equal favourite for VRC Oaks after Wakeful Stakes win

James Cummings has labelled lightly-raced Willowy as a promising stayer after her victory in the Wakeful Stakes at Flemington.

Now the daughter of Kermadec is likely to be given her chance in the Group 1 Kennedy Oaks (2500m) at Flemington on Thursday after her win in Saturday’s Group 2 race over 2000m for three-year-old fillies.

Ridden by Jye Mcneil, Willowy ($11) scored a half-length win from Daisies ($7) with Douceur ($31) three-quarters-of-a-length away third.

Cummings said Willowy had come along in leaps and bounds in a short amount of time.

“She’s quite typical of the Kermadec breed,” Cummings said.

“You can get a spring three-year-old and we thought she was certainly improving rapidly enough to tackle the Wakeful.

“She looks like a very promising stayer and we look like we’re in business.

“She’s improving rapidly and the guys have done a great job to nurse her along and have her settled in quickly in Melbourne.

“The filly is nominated for the Oaks. It is an important conversation for us to have, but if she pulls up absolutely bouncy, they it is a consideration to back her up on Thursday.”

Cummings said the filly should handle the step up in journey from 2000m on Saturday to 2500m on Thursday if the decision was made to run the filly.

“She’s got a big pedigree on her dam side. She’s nominated so we can talk about it,” Cummings said.

Willowy is now the $4 equal favourite with Sportsbet in the VRC Oaks.
