The Silver Eagle (1300m) at Randwick will shape the spring path for emerging mare Gerringong, with her team set to decide between the Golden Eagle (1500m) and The Invitation (1400m) depending on her performance this Saturday.
After finishing runner-up to Manaal in the Golden Pendant, jockey Tim Clark said Gerringong has taken improvement from the run and is ready to show her full potential back in Sydney.
“She would need to do something pretty special on Saturday to put her hand up but I’m not saying she isn’t capable of doing that,” Clark said.
“The other day she ran well but she’d just come back from Melbourne. She looks like she has really blossomed in the past few weeks back in Sydney and I think she will go a lot better this weekend.
“Hopefully she can put her hand up for a Golden Eagle berth, or there is The Invitation as well.”
Gerringong will jump from the inside barrier carrying 54kg—significantly less than Group 1 rival Linebacker, who shoulders 58.5kg and looms as the top seed for the race. Clark said his mare’s tactical pace and light weight give her a chance to upset the more seasoned runners.
“We’ve got that weight advantage and tactically, we might have a slight advantage as far as position in the run goes,” he said.
“She is knocking on the door, she is lightly raced, and she is a talented mare in her own right.
“Hopefully she can knock one of these races over soon. She’s due.”
Gerringong, a multiple stakes placegetter from just nine starts, continues to impress connections with her progression, and Saturday’s result will go a long way to deciding whether she chases the $10 million Golden Eagle or the rich Invitation later in the spring.
